Best of the Farm Equipment Web: September 23, 2022

Farm equipment editors come across a variety of articles, social media posts, podcasts and videos that offer a unique look at various aspects of our formidable agricultural machinery industry. Here’s our favorite content from the last week on the web:

Pete says it’s the hottest used combine market he’s ever seen

Machinery Pete details the hottest used combine market he has seen in his nearly 33 years of daily tracking used values and auction prices across North America. Rising average auction prices on a myriad of used combine models are highlighted, along with an overview of recent very high auction prices.

Brannon: “Enjoy the trip”

In this week’s blog on Rural Lifestyle Dealer, Principal Dealer Tim Brannon will make you laugh with vivid memories while making an important point. “Managing stress, delegating responsibilities, finding a little humor, motivating staff and hoping for a better customer relationship…it’s to be appreciated,” he says.

Mike Wiles tells how tire size almost got him fired

In this video our friend Mike Wiles aka Tractor Mike shares a funny story about an inventory error. “Whenever I think of tire options, I remember when I worked for AGCO when the Massey Ferguson 383 tractor models were a hot commodity. I was constantly looking for a 383 that could be ordered for one of my dealers, one day distribution told me there was one in Charleston Harbor with no order against him. I snagged him!”

Rural Lifestyle Dealer Debut in print 15 years ago

15 years ago, around the same time, we put the finishing touches on the very first printed issue of Rural Lifestyle Dealer. In this issue, we featured our first article on What Rural People Want From You. The story highlighted the importance of treating your rural customers as if they were just as important as your agricultural customers (because they are).

“They made me feel like a second class citizen. They weren’t interested in me because I wasn’t going to buy a combine. It didn’t make sense either because they were in a good location to run a lot of areas here,” he says. “Look, I’m not stupid and I won’t give my money to anyone who treats me the way I am because I don’t use equipment to make a living or because I only have seven acres. I didn’t need the arrogance or the irritation.”

Where are they now? John Hannah

Something tells us that the folks at TriGreen Equipment in Alabama are much happier to face John Hannah now than those who lined up against him in his “early career” days. You’ll hear how this former NFL great enjoys heaven on earth — and his Deere equipment roster — on his Alabama cow-calf operation.

Video of the week: Farming as a Service: the Salin 247 autonomous no-till electric seeder

Salin 247 presents its prototype of a small-scale, fully autonomous electric planter. Thanks to its 10 kW battery, the planter is able to run continuously for more than an hour per charge, while reducing compaction and maintaining soil health. While the prototype is a hybrid model allowing up to 12 hours with its gas generator, the ultimate goal is an all-electric, battery-powered planter.

Salin 247 will be showcased at the 2023 Precision Farming Dealer Summit in St. Louis, January 9-10. Learn more and register here.
