John Deere unveils fully autonomous tractor at CES 2022

MOLINE, III., January 4, 2022 / CNW / – At a press conference at CES 2022, John Deere (NYSE: DE) unveiled a fully autonomous tractor ready for large-scale production. The machine combines the Deere 8R tractor, a TruSet compatible scissor plow, a GPS guidance system and new cutting edge technology. The autonomous tractor will be available to farmers later this year.

The autonomous tractor has a specific goal: to feed the world. The world’s population is expected grow from around 8 billion to nearly 10 billion people by 2050, increasing global food demand by 50 percent. In addition, farmers must feed this growing population with less available land and skilled labor, and work through variables inherent in agriculture such as changing weather and climate conditions, variations in soil quality. and the presence of weeds and pests. All of these factors impact a farmer’s ability to farm during the most critical times of the year.

  • The autonomous tractor has six pairs of stereo cameras, which allow 360-degree obstacle detection and distance calculation.

  • The images captured by the cameras are transmitted to a deep neural network which classifies each pixel in about 100 milliseconds and determines whether the machine continues to move or stops, depending on an obstacle is detected.

  • The autonomous tractor also constantly checks its position against a geofence, making sure it is working where it is supposed to and with an accuracy of less than an inch.

To use the autonomous tractor, farmers only need to transport the machine to a field and configure it for autonomous operation. Using John Deere Operations Center Mobile, they can sweep left to right to start the machine. While the machine is running, the farmer can leave the field to concentrate on other tasks, while monitoring the condition of the machine from his mobile device.

John Deere Operations Center Mobile provides access to live video, images, data and measurements, and allows a farmer to adjust speed, depth and more. In the event of work quality anomalies or machine health issues, farmers will be notified remotely and can make adjustments to optimize machine performance.
