Petrus (Peter) Mittertreiner
March 10, 1931 – August 21, 2022
Petrus (Peter) Mittertreiner passed away quietly early Sunday morning August 21, 2022 at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia.
A devoted son, brother, husband, father and grandfather, Peter will be remembered for his easy charm and affable nature, his ability to fix anything from cars to industrial dishwashers, his grace on the dance and her joy in helping people.
Peter was born in The Hague in the Netherlands, one of eight children of Paulina (Devilee) and Antonius Mittertreiner. Peter was predeceased by his wife Cisca (Janssen), his daughter Pauline, his brothers Johan and Frans and his sisters Engeline and Jose. He is survived by his daughter Bernice Mittertreiner Neal (Steve), his sons Tony Mittertreiner (Janice Eng) and Pierre Mittertreiner, his brothers Paul and Fons, his devoted sisters-in-law Doris, Truus, Riet and Mies, Riet, Adri, his beloved grandchildren Em, Kevin, Gwen, Rachael, Hilary and his beloved companion Eleanor.
Peter emigrated to Canada in 1953 and began his career in the parts department at Massey-Ferguson in Calgary, spending a stint at the Hansma farm in Granum to understand how farm machinery worked while working with it. Married in 1959 to Cisca, Peter greatly enjoyed his job as paymaster and office manager for a pipeline company, working for nearly a decade in the Drayton Valley oilfields in Cochrane in an office trailer with his loyal boxer, Bella, at his side. When the family moved to Calgary, Peter started working at the Mannix Company as a computer systems manager, setting up a small workshop in the basement of our house for DIY and building a great playground in the backyard. for children which included a garden, swing, horizontal bar and, more marvelously, a seesaw whose pivot was a large iron spring. In the fall of 1978, the family moved to Vancouver Island, British Columbia, where Peter developed a business selling supplies to restaurants from Ladysmith to Ucluelet, earning the respect and affection of the owners and the staff across the island going the extra mile to repair equipment in their kitchens. After Peter and Cisca separated, Peter continued to settle on Vancouver Island, helping maintain two public oceanfront parks in Yellow Point and forging a strong band of friends in Nanaimo. , who loved to dance as much as he did.
Peter always kept Cisca in his heart and mind, remaining devoted to her until his death. He was a happy and loving dad. He especially cared for, protected and loved his most vulnerable child, Pierre, and dedicated decades of his life to supporting Down Syndrome Societies in British Columbia and Alberta. Later he moved to Vancouver and joined The Home Depot as a sales associate, delighting customers by helping them solve all kinds of problems. His membership in the Knights of Columbus and his work with the Guardian Angel Parish gave his life meaning and spiritual sustenance, and he is remembered by fellow Knights as a true friend, role model Catholic, and an exceptional member of the Order. Peter was a fit and vigorous man, who enjoyed being outdoors, especially in the forest or by the sea. He hiked the Stanley Park Seawall daily until he was 88 years old. When a best friend of the island visited, he was dancing the night away at all the hot spots on Robson Street (they were always admitted on arrival, regardless of the lineup).
Peter spent his final years at Haro Park Centre, in the heart of Vancouver’s West End neighborhood that he loved so much. We are eternally grateful to the kind and gentle people there – so many people who took care of him body and soul, who danced and sang with him and who were always delighted to be charmed by Peter.
We love you, Peter. Rest in peace.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m., November 12 in Vancouver at Guardian Angel Parish, 1161 Broughton Street North, Vancouver, BC. The service will be streamed online for those unable to attend.
